1/17/11: Race Plans for 2011

I've been going back and forth a lot on which races I want to do in 2011 and have finally figured it out. Maybe. I hope.

Running the Philly Marathon with dad and then setting a 5K PR shortly afterwards inspired me to change my original plan and focus on flatter, faster running. Don't get me wrong, I love running in the mountains. But those races reminded me that I also love running fast (or at least fast for me) and that road races can be a lot of fun.

The first big race will be the NJ 100 on March 19th. It's been a while since I finished the Vermont 100, and I've really been itching to finish another 100 after not making it at Tahoe. This is a flat course on a 25 mile loop trail that is very close to my parent's house in NJ. That should make the logistics very easy, and I'm hoping to be able to put together a good time with the easier terrain.

My only plans before the NJ 100 will be the Seneca Greenway 50K that I've run for the last 3 years. This should be a good tune-up race and gauge of fitness. I was thinking about throwing some other races in, but I think it's best to just focus more on training.

Late spring and early summer are still wide open. I'm sure I'll jump in some low key events, and I may try to run a fast 5K or something like that. Who knows! It would also be awesome to run a trail marathon or 50K with Dylan and Danny if I can talk them into it. What do you think fellas?

Then the big fall race will be the Chicago Marathon. I'm pretty fired up to try to train for the marathon again and break my PR. If all goes well, I'd love to be able to break 2:50.

So I'm sure there will be more to come, but that's the general plan. Training has been great the last few weeks, so the year is off to a good start! Hopefully it will pay off in these races.

I might be down for some trail racing this year. I was thinking that I wouldn't run a marathon this year in order to focus on soccer, but a trail marathon changes everything. And endurance is good for soccer too.

My only request is that it not be a 50K race. Those do not count as ultra marathons and, being marginally more distance than a standard marathon, they are really just pretentious marathons. This applies to running and not cross country skiing marathons.

Flawless logic, Dylan. Basically you are saying go big, go REALLY big, or go home. Whatever you do, don't go slightly more than big (unless it is a cross country ski race).

If that is what it takes to get you out there, then you've got it! I'll start looking at race schedules.

Haha - that's a perfect summary of my comments. And if you cannot go REALLY big (like me), then you either have to go big or go home (but not slightly more than big).
